In the Nomads’ Footsteps.
From the moment you arrive, you’re welcomed into a journey that supports a unique conservation mission; restoring this iconic breed to its rightful place on the Central Asian steppes.
Over the course of 11 days, you’ll ride through some of Kyrgyzstan’s most dramatic and untouched landscapes — from wide alpine valleys and lush summer pastures to high mountain passes and glacial lakes. Much of the route follows ancient nomadic pathways that have connected communities for centuries, so this trail is as much about human history and culture as it is about horses. You’ll camp under the stars in tents and traditional yurts, sharing meals and stories with fellow riders and local guides, and you’ll gain a genuine appreciation for the nomadic lifestyle that still thrives in these remote regions.
The riding itself is rewarding and varied: much of it is at a walk as you climb and descend steep terrain, allowing plenty of time to soak in the vast mountain scenery and keep an eye out for wildlife. The Chaar horses, known for their striking spotted coats and sure-footedness, are well suited to these environments, and your connection with them becomes one of the highlights of the trip. Because you’ll be travelling at high altitudes — often above 3,000 meters — preparation for temperature changes and rugged conditions is important, and the guides will brief you thoroughly to ensure everyone is comfortable and safe.

know before you go
This trip is best suited for those with a passion for horses and outdoor adventures. Previous outdoor riding, trekking and camping experience is important as this is a truly remote experience. 7 days will be spent camping in the mountains with tents or yurts, no bathrooms, no electricity and often no cell phone signal.
Even though it is summer, many parts of the trip are at high altitude (over 3000m) so you will need to prepare for both high and low temperatures, wind, and rain. Much of the riding is at a walk because we will be climbing and descending steep mountain passes, so there is a lot of opportunity to enjoy the scenery.

The trail is led by highly experienced local guides from Chaar Ranch, who know the terrain, the horses, and the cultural highlights intimately. They are passionate about both the Chaar horses and the Kyrgyz nomadic traditions, and they ensure that every rider has a safe and enriching experience. Riders should ideally be confident at all paces and comfortable in varied terrain, as the trail includes mountain passes, uneven valleys, and long days in the saddle. Previous trail-riding experience is strongly recommended, and a good level of fitness will help you fully enjoy the adventure. Helmets are provided, but bringing your own preferred riding gear and layers for changing weather is advised.
Minimum 6 riders and maximum 10

The Appaloosa horse is known for its spotted coat caused by a genetic mutation. The Chaar breed is rare and culturally significant, living in the rugged terrain of Kyrgyzstan and revived through our successful breeding program. The Chaar horses are an important part of Kyrgyz culture, used for transportation and herding, and featured in traditional folklore and ceremonies.

All horses on the trail are fitted with high-quality saddles and bridles specifically chosen for comfort and safety over long days in varied terrain. Saddles are generally English-style endurance saddles, designed to provide support while allowing close contact with the horse. Your guides will also provide advice on stirrup adjustment, saddle comfort, and any equipment tips to ensure both you and your horse are comfortable throughout the trail.
