Follow in the footsteps of Kyrgyzstan's nomads on a horseback expedition through the remote mountains of Central Asia. This expedition takes place in July when it is mid-summer in the mountains, when the Chaar herds graze at their highest. You'll ride past waterfalls and glacial lakes and over high passes to reach the pastures where this year's foals are seeing their home for the first time. The horses roam loose across peaks and valleys, so finding them is part of the trip. Along the way you'll see the whole herd, from newborn foals to the Chaar stallion.

At the heart of this adventure is the rare Chaar Appaloosa horse and the conservation project at Chaar Ranch, dedicated to preserving this distinctive breed. These hardy, sure-footed horses are perfectly suited to the challenging mountain terrain. Much of the riding is at a walk due to the steep terrain, allowing time to appreciate the breathtaking scenery. This is a wilderness expedition, with nights spent in traditional yurts, tents and local guesthouses. Travelling at altitudes frequently exceeding 3,000 metres, the adventure requires good fitness, an adaptable attitude and a willingness to embrace basic comforts. For experienced riders seeking authentic culture and spectacular landscapes.

Level of Riding & Fitness

This expedition is suitable for experienced riders who are confident at walk, trot and canter and comfortable riding over challenging, uneven terrain. Previous experience of trail riding and spending long days in the saddle is strongly recommended. Although much of the journey is undertaken at a walk due to the steep mountain ascents and descents, riders must be capable of controlling their horse independently and navigating narrow tracks, rocky paths and high mountain passes.

A good level of physical fitness and a sense of adventure are essential. The expedition involves seven days in remote mountain areas, with nights spent in yurts or tents without conventional bathroom facilities, electricity or reliable mobile phone reception. Much of the route takes place above 3,000 metres, where temperatures and weather conditions can change rapidly, even during summer. Riders should be prepared for cold nights, wind, rain and physically demanding days.

Guides & Group Size

The expedition is led by experienced local guides from Chaar Ranch, who have extensive knowledge of the region's mountain trails, horses and nomadic traditions. Passionate about preserving the rare Chaar Appaloosa and sharing their Kyrgyz heritage, they offer a fascinating insight into the culture, wildlife and landscapes encountered throughout the journey. The guides are experienced in navigating the remote mountain terrain and are accompanied by an English-speaking guide to help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for international guests.

Group size: Minimum 6 riders, maximum 10 riders.

The Horses

The horses used on this expedition are the rare Chaar Appaloosas, a distinctive spotted breed with deep roots in Kyrgyz history and culture. Known for their strength, stamina and exceptional sure-footedness, these hardy mountain horses are ideally suited to navigating the steep passes, rocky trails and remote valleys of the Kyrgyz mountains.

The Chaar horse has traditionally played an important role in Kyrgyz life, providing transport, helping herders manage livestock and featuring in local folklore and ceremonies. Today, Chaar Ranch is working to preserve and restore this remarkable breed through a dedicated conservation and breeding programme. Riding these horses offers a unique opportunity to support this important project while developing a close partnership with an animal perfectly adapted to its natural environment.

Tack & Riding Equipment

The horses are equipped with good-quality saddles and bridles selected for comfort and security during long days in the mountains. The saddles are generally English-style endurance saddles, designed to provide support for the rider while allowing the horse freedom of movement over challenging terrain. Your guides will assist with saddle adjustments and equipment to ensure both horse and rider remain comfortable throughout the expedition.

Riding helmets are provided, although riders are encouraged to bring their own well-fitting helmet and familiar riding equipment. Suitable riding boots, comfortable clothing and several warm, waterproof layers are essential due to the changing mountain weather. Riders should also be prepared for the practical demands of camping and travelling through remote areas.
